Dhinidhi Desinghu Makes History as India's First Youth Olympic Swimming Medalist
Historic Achievement at the Youth Olympic Games
Dhinidhi Desinghu, a 16-year-old swimmer from Bengaluru, has made history by winning India's inaugural swimming medal at the Youth Olympic Games 2026. She secured a bronze in the women's 100m freestyle event held in Dakar, Senegal, clocking a national record of 56.27 seconds. Dhinidhi finished behind Croatia's Ana Bobanović, who won gold with a time of 55.89 seconds, and New Zealand's Alyssa Lawson, who took silver at 56.13 seconds. This achievement marks India's first medal in the current edition of the Youth Olympic Games.
Overcoming Early Fears
Dhinidhi's journey to becoming a top swimmer began with significant challenges. As a child, she was terrified of water, once running home in her swimsuit rather than entering a swimming pool. "I remember being really scared," she shared with Olympics.com. "When I was six or seven, I went to the pool during summer break but ran back home because I hated it so much." Her parents eventually had to join her in the pool to encourage her to take swimming lessons. What started as a nearby activity soon transformed into a passion and competitive pursuit.
Rapid Ascent in Competitive Swimming
Dhinidhi's rise in the swimming world has been swift. At just 14, she was the youngest member of India's team at the Paris 2024 Olympics, where she competed alongside elite swimmers, including French star Leon Marchand. Her Olympic experience, particularly living in the Olympic Village and competing in the same pool as her idols, was unforgettable. In Dakar, she carried that experience into her performance, clocking 56.80 seconds in the heats, the third-fastest overall, before improving her time to 56.27 seconds in the final.
Support from Bajaj Finserv
Dhinidhi's remarkable achievement has garnered attention from Bajaj Finserv, which announced its support for her earlier this year as part of its commitment to nurturing young athletes in India. Manav Mianwal, Group Chief Marketing Officer at Bajaj Finserv, expressed pride in Dhinidhi's accomplishment, stating, "Her historic bronze is a proud moment for India and an inspiration for young athletes. Behind this medal are years of hard work and determination. This shows that Indian talent can compete globally when supported collectively." The partnership will assist Dhinidhi with training, competition exposure, and necessary resources, facilitated by sports talent management company Baseline Ventures.
