Dharavi Redevelopment Project: Aiming for Housing Equality and Livelihood Protection

Overview of the Dharavi Redevelopment Project

SVR Srinivas, the CEO of the Dharavi Redevelopment Project (DRP), highlighted on Tuesday the project's pivotal role in the redevelopment of Mumbai, focusing on housing and livelihood opportunities. In a recent interview, he elaborated on the initiative, which also prioritizes the establishment of resilient infrastructure and ecological systems.

Srinivas articulated a vision for a slum-free Mumbai, which extends to a broader goal of achieving a slum-free Maharashtra and ultimately a slum-free India. He emphasized the significance of this project in the context of urban redevelopment.

The project's guiding principle is 'housing for all,' ensuring that no one is excluded from the housing process. He described the DRP as the most inclusive Slum Rehabilitation Authority (SRA) initiative ever undertaken in India. This urban renewal effort aims to transform Dharavi, known as Asia's largest slum, into a modern, integrated township.

Commitment to Sustainable Development

Srinivas reiterated the government's steadfast dedication to converting one of Asia's largest informal settlements into a sustainable urban environment. He noted that the DRP is not only about providing shelter but also about safeguarding livelihoods.

He stated, "The primary focus of this project is housing for all, which we are committed to delivering. Additionally, we must ensure that livelihoods are preserved. This initiative is more about livelihoods than anything else. I consider this project a movement, as nothing of this scale has ever occurred in India's urban redevelopment history."

Implementation and Features of the Project

The DRP is being executed through a Special Purpose Vehicle (SPV) under a public-private partnership (PPP) framework, involving a collaboration between the Adani Group and the Government of Maharashtra.

Eligible residents of Dharavi will receive flats featuring independent kitchens and bathrooms, with a minimum area of 350 square feet, which is 17% larger than the standard in other slum redevelopment projects in Mumbai.

Last month, the ambitious Dharavi Redevelopment Project received approval from Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis. The master plan aims to enhance the existing characteristics of Dharavi and create a world-class district for its residents, reimagining a new core for Mumbai.

Future Vision for Dharavi

The Dharavi Redevelopment Project presents a unique chance to improve the living and working conditions of its residents, aspiring to elevate their quality of life through enhanced infrastructure and public amenities. According to the Dharavi Master Plan, the project is founded on three key principles: fostering economic transformation through redevelopment, building resilient ecological and infrastructural systems, and promoting equity within Dharavi.

The plan includes a network of green and public spaces, from expansive city parks to smaller community playgrounds, ensuring that every resident has access to vibrant, walkable areas. This network aims to bolster ecological resilience and improve the daily quality of life for Dharavi's inhabitants.

A significant public open space is being designed at the heart of Dharavi, intended to meet the recreational needs of both local residents and the broader Mumbai community.
