India's batting coach, Sitanshu Kotak, praised Devdutt Padikkal for seizing his long-awaited chance, celebrating his first Test century as a promising indicator of the talent within India's youthful squad. On Saturday, Padikkal transformed an opportunity arising from an injury into a record-setting performance, scoring his maiden Test century as India took charge in the opening Test against Sri Lanka in Galle. In just his third Test match and after nearly two years away, Padikkal finished the rain-affected first day unbeaten at 131 runs off 178 balls, helping India reach 288 for two in 73 overs.

Facing a pivotal match for his career in Galle against Sri Lanka, Padikkal stepped up to fill the number three position, which was left vacant due to Sai Sudharsan's injury, marking his ascent with a century in only his third Test appearance.

Coach's Praise for Preparation

Kotak expressed his delight for Padikkal, noting, "I'm thrilled for him because he has been waiting for this moment, and when it arrived, he capitalized on it. This is encouraging as I believe we have a young team filled with promising players eager for their chances."

He attributed Padikkal's success to his extensive preparation and dedication, particularly in honing his skills against spin and enhancing his back-foot play. Kotak emphasized that much of the credit goes to Padikkal for his commitment over the past few years.

"Regarding his preparation, I observed Devdutt at the NCA and noted his diligent work on his initial movements and back-foot technique. We always aim to prepare for conditions where the ball is likely to turn, focusing on techniques like stepping out, sweeping, and back-foot play," Kotak explained. "While we provided a solid three-day game and six net sessions, the credit truly belongs to the players for their batting performance."

Padikkal Joins Kohli in Historic Achievement

In a remarkable feat, Padikkal joined the ranks of legendary cricketer Virat Kohli, becoming the second Indian to achieve an international century on Independence Day. Notably, he is the first Test centurion to accomplish this on such a significant occasion, as Kohli's century was scored in an ODI.
