Devastating Earthquakes Strike Venezuela, Emergency Declared
Major Earthquakes Hit Venezuela
In Caracas, Venezuela, two powerful earthquakes struck within a mere 40 seconds on Wednesday evening, causing widespread destruction. Buildings collapsed across the capital and several other states, forcing thousands to spend the night outdoors.
According to the United States Geological Survey (USGS), the first quake registered a magnitude of 7.2, later classified as a foreshock. This was followed by a stronger main quake measuring 7.5, marking one of the most powerful seismic events in Venezuela in the last century.
State of Emergency Declared
Acting President Delcy Rodriguez has declared a nationwide state of emergency. While the government has confirmed casualties, the official death toll has not yet been released as rescue and relief operations continue.
The most severe damage occurred in Caracas, particularly in the Altamira and Los Palos Grandes neighborhoods, where numerous high-rise buildings collapsed. Following the tremors, residents evacuated their homes with family members and pets, gathering in streets and open areas, enveloped in dust and debris.
Destruction Amplified by Shallow Depth
Experts noted that the earthquakes occurred at shallow depths, which significantly increased their destructive impact.
Key Details:
First Earthquake: Magnitude 7.2
Depth: 22 kilometers
Second Earthquake: Magnitude 7.5
Depth: 10 kilometers
Time Interval: Approximately 40 seconds
Epicenter: Near the Morón area
Airport and Metro Services Suspended
Airport and Services Affected
Simón Bolívar International Airport has been temporarily closed. Many areas are experiencing disruptions in electricity, mobile networks, and internet services. Public transport and metro services have also been impacted.
Tsunami Warning Lifted
Initially, a tsunami warning was issued for Puerto Rico and the Virgin Islands following the earthquakes. However, this warning was later rescinded by U.S. authorities as the threat diminished.
USGS Predicts Significant Casualties
The USGS PAGER system categorized the event as a red alert, indicating a high likelihood of significant casualties and economic losses. However, this is merely a scientific estimate and should not be interpreted as the official death toll.
International Aid Offered
Colombia, a neighboring country, has extended offers of technical and relief assistance to Venezuela. International humanitarian organizations are also preparing to deliver relief supplies and medical aid.
Ongoing Crisis
Authorities are urging residents to stay away from damaged buildings and remain vigilant for aftershocks. Schools have been closed, and thousands are seeking refuge in relief camps and open spaces.
