Devastating 7.7 Magnitude Earthquake Hits Indonesia: Casualties and Damage Reported

Severe Earthquake Strikes Off Indonesia's Coast

A significant earthquake measuring 7.7 on the Richter scale struck off the coast of Indonesia early Saturday morning, resulting in the collapse of structures and claiming at least five lives. The tremor caused widespread panic in an area known for its seismic activity.

In response to the quake, authorities issued a tsunami alert, advising residents in coastal areas to seek higher ground. However, this warning was later rescinded after Indonesia's Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics Agency reported no significant changes in sea levels that would threaten coastal regions.

According to the US Geological Survey, the earthquake occurred in the Flores region at a depth of 10 kilometers at 5:58 AM local time, with its epicenter located 68 kilometers north-northwest of Ende city in East Nusa Tenggara province. The initial quake was followed by multiple aftershocks.

Rudi Darmoko, the police chief of East Nusa Tenggara, reported that preliminary assessments indicated two deaths in Sikka Regency and three in Manggarai Regency, as the earthquake caused extensive damage and building collapses. He noted that power outages in various cities and villages have hindered communication and complicated rescue operations.

Darmoko stated, “We are still gathering information on the extent of the damage and casualties, but communication disruptions are making it challenging.”

Local television footage depicted hospital evacuations, with staff moving patients and medical equipment outdoors as a precautionary measure. Temporary treatment areas were established to accommodate emergency needs.

Impact Felt Across Flores Island

The earthquake's effects were felt throughout much of Flores Island, with initial reports suggesting significant destruction.

Yohanna Embu, a resident of Sikka Regency, described how numerous buildings sustained damage from the intense shaking, prompting residents to flee to higher ground.

She remarked, “Many structures here were affected... I witnessed the waiting area at the port terminal in Maumere collapse.”

Students at St. Peter Major Seminary in Sikka, who were attending morning Mass, panicked when the roof of an assembly hall gave way, according to Rev. Guidelbertus Tanga, the rector of the seminary, locally known as Ritapiret Seminary on the predominantly Catholic island of Flores.

Tanga recounted, “Our students and nuns rushed out in fear as the roof collapsed. At least one priest suffered a broken leg after jumping from the second floor during the quake.”

The quake also triggered panic in Bima, a city in the neighboring West Nusa Tenggara province, with reports of damage emerging from various areas in southern Sulawesi island.

Indonesian authorities initially issued tsunami warnings for regions including East Nusa Tenggara, West Nusa Tenggara, South Sulawesi, and Southeast Sulawesi, advising residents to avoid beaches and riverbanks. The agency identified the shallow undersea quake near Flores Island.

Indonesia's Vulnerability to Earthquakes

Indonesia, an extensive archipelago comprising over 17,000 islands, is highly susceptible to earthquakes and volcanic eruptions due to its position on the 'Ring of Fire,' an area characterized by numerous volcanoes and fault lines in the Pacific Basin.

A devastating earthquake in 1992 triggered a tsunami that resulted in approximately 2,500 fatalities on Flores, part of a cluster of islands in eastern Indonesia.

In 2018, a magnitude 7.5 earthquake generated a localized tsunami that devastated coastal regions, while liquefaction caused by the quake transformed entire neighborhoods into rivers of sludge in Palu, located on the Palu-Koro Fault, leading to over 4,400 deaths.

In 2010, a three-meter wave struck the Mentawai Islands off Sumatra's western coast shortly after a massive offshore earthquake, claiming more than 400 lives and destroying hundreds of homes.

The catastrophic magnitude 9.1 earthquake off Sumatra in December 2004 triggered a tsunami that resulted in the deaths of 230,000 individuals across a dozen countries.
