TMC's Bold Challenge to the Prime Minister

As the second phase of voting takes place in West Bengal on Wednesday, April 29, Derek O'Brien, a Member of Parliament from the Trinamool Congress (TMC), has thrown down a significant challenge to Prime Minister Narendra Modi. He stated that if Mamata Banerjee and the TMC emerge victorious in the state, Modi should resign from his position. In a video shared by O'Brien, he remarked, 'Narendra, you declared that you are the candidate for all 294 seats in Bengal. Stop making grand statements and accept this challenge. When Mamata Banerjee and the TMC win on May 4, you should step down from the Prime Minister's office.' On April 29, voting is being conducted for 142 seats, many of which are strongholds of the TMC and are affected by a special intensive review process.

Voter Turnout and Allegations of Misconduct

Approximately 321 million voters are casting their ballots today across seven districts in 142 assembly constituencies, determining the fate of 1,448 candidates. The opposition party, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), has conducted extensive campaigning ahead of the elections, with Prime Minister Modi holding 19 rallies since March 15. Mamata Banerjee, who is seeking another term as Chief Minister, has made serious allegations against the central forces deployed for the elections. She claimed that they are preventing the councillor from ward number 70 from leaving and are detaining her party members. Banerjee accused several observers of being outsiders working under BJP's directives, questioning the legitimacy of the voting process. She stated, 'How can people vote under such circumstances?' Additionally, she alleged that her party workers were assaulted, asserting that the BJP aims to manipulate the elections.

Concerns Over Election Integrity

Mamata expressed her desire for peaceful voting but raised concerns about certain observers and police officials being brought in from different locations who do not understand Bengal. She mentioned that her young block president was arrested in the morning, prompting her to visit the area. 'I did not go to the police station; my party worker went there. Around 2 AM, a team of CRPF personnel, without local police, went to the house of my councillor in ward 70 and attacked it. His wife and children were home alone. When they were told he wasn't there, the CRPF assaulted them, snatched their phone, and warned them against any party activities. I can show you the evidence.'
