Derek O'Brien Addresses Congress-AAP Rivalry: A Unified Front Against BJP?
TMC's Perspective on Punjab's Political Landscape
New Delhi: On Saturday, Derek O'Brien, the national joint secretary of the Trinamool Congress (TMC), attempted to ease tensions between the Congress and the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) in Punjab. He acknowledged that while their competition in the state is expected, it does not impact the collective opposition's struggle against the BJP.
In a statement shared on X, O'Brien, who leads the TMC Parliamentary Party in the Rajya Sabha, noted that the Congress and AAP are engaged in a legitimate contest in Punjab, which naturally leads to confrontations. However, he emphasized that the BJP should not take pleasure in these disputes.
O'Brien remarked, "In Punjab, it’s a straightforward contest between Congress and AAP. It’s only natural for them to clash. The BJP has no reason to celebrate these differences. All opposition parties are aware of their roles in the fight against the BJP. Everything is fine."
His comments come as tensions escalate between Congress and AAP in the lead-up to the 2027 Punjab Assembly elections. Recently, Rahul Gandhi, the Leader of Opposition in the Lok Sabha, kicked off Congress's campaign at an 'Insaaf Rally' in Sangrur on November 4, where he criticized the AAP government for its handling of the drug crisis and claimed that Punjab is being governed from Delhi under the influence of AAP's national convenor, Arvind Kejriwal.
In response, AAP accused Gandhi of launching personal attacks against Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann.
Although TMC is part of the INDIA coalition, AAP has distanced itself from this opposition alliance.
