Call for Resignation from BJP Spokesperson

BJP's chief spokesperson and legislator, Randhir Sharma, has recently called for the resignation of Himachal Pradesh Chief Minister Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu on moral grounds, following the performance of the Congress government in the recent urban local body and Panchayati Raj elections. This statement was made during a press conference in Shimla on Wednesday. Sharma characterized these elections as a semi-final ahead of the upcoming assembly elections, asserting that the results reflect a growing public discontent towards the ruling Congress party. He stated that the people of Himachal Pradesh have lost faith in the Congress government. After losing the semi-final, the Chief Minister should resign on moral grounds and seek a new mandate from the public.

Sharma referenced Congress leaders labeling the elections as a semi-final, arguing that if Congress itself considers these elections a semi-final, then the losing team does not advance to the finals. He reiterated that the Chief Minister should resign on moral grounds to pave the way for new assembly elections. Expressing gratitude to BJP workers and congratulating the victorious candidates, Sharma noted that the results indicate increasing public support for the BJP and dissatisfaction with the Congress government.

According to Sharma, the BJP secured decisive victories in three out of four municipal corporations—Mandi, Dharamshala, and Solan—while Congress managed to retain only the Palampur seat. He emphasized that the results suggest voters are determined to remove the current government and restore the BJP to power. Sharma mentioned that the BJP gained a majority in 12 out of 22 municipal councils and 18 out of 25 municipal committees where elections were held. Regarding the Panchayati Raj elections, although district council elections are not formally contested under party symbols, political parties still support candidates. Sharma accused Congress of distancing itself from the results despite supporting several candidates.

He alleged that Congress leaders, ministers, and legislators actively campaigned for party-supported candidates in the district council elections, yet voters rejected them. Sharma claimed that BJP-supported candidates won 144 out of 250 district council wards, while Congress secured around 60 seats, with many independent winners ideologically aligned with the BJP. He pointed out that Congress failed to open its account in Bilaspur and faced significant defeats in Hamirpur, Sirmaur, and several other districts. Additionally, BJP-supported candidates won 1,199 seats in the state’s Panchayat Samiti (Block Development Committee), while Congress only managed to secure 477 seats. Sharma noted that most of the other independent winners also showed sympathy towards the BJP.

He criticized Chief Minister Sukhu's contradictory comments regarding the election results. Sukhu initially claimed that the Panchayati Raj elections were not contested on party lines, yet later attempted to assert victory. The BJP spokesperson also condemned Sukhu's promise to allocate ₹50 lakh in development funds to winning wards during the municipal election campaign, labeling such statements as inappropriate electoral influence. Sharma further stated that despite these promises, the public did not trust the Congress government.
