Demand for Justice: NESO Calls for Death Penalty in Tripura Student's Murder
NESO's Strong Stance on Racial Violence
Shillong, Dec 30: The North East Students' Organisation (NESO) has called for the death penalty for those involved in the murder of a 24-year-old student from Tripura in Dehradun. They have also requested the direct involvement of Uttarakhand Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami in this case.
As a collective of student groups from all northeastern states, NESO submitted a memorandum to the Chief Minister, asserting that the attack on Angel Chakma was racially motivated. The victim faced derogatory remarks targeting his physical appearance during the assault.
Additionally, Angel's brother, Michael Chakma, was reportedly attacked in the same incident.
NESO highlighted that such acts of violence are part of a troubling trend of harassment faced by individuals from the northeast across various regions in India.
The organisation has urged the Uttarakhand government to take immediate action to ensure the safety of students and residents from the northeast in Dehradun and throughout the state. They called for effective measures to enhance mental, social, and physical security through relevant authorities.
In addition to demanding capital punishment for the offenders, NESO has proposed the establishment of a dedicated police station to handle cases of racial discrimination and violence against northeastern individuals.
They also advocated for the creation of a robust anti-racism law, arguing that the current legal framework is insufficient to tackle crimes based on racial and ethnic bias.
NESO expressed hope for prompt action from the Uttarakhand government to deliver justice and prevent future incidents.
Angel, an MBA student from Nandannagar in West Tripura district, was attacked by a group of six individuals after he confronted them about a racial slur on December 9. He tragically succumbed to his injuries on December 26.
