Increased Safety Measures in Delhi's Nightlife Venues

New Delhi: Following a tragic nightclub fire in Goa, restaurants and clubs in Delhi are ramping up their fire and crowd safety protocols. This initiative comes after a citywide inspection drive was initiated to ensure safety standards are met.

Manpreet Singh, the treasurer of the National Restaurant Association of India, mentioned that an advisory has been sent to all member establishments urging them to enhance their safety measures.

"We have recommended that our members take all necessary precautions. This includes inspecting all equipment, ensuring exit doors are clear and functional, and increasing staff presence during peak hours," Singh stated.

Joy Singh, founder of Raasta and Yeti clubs, echoed these sentiments, noting that their venues already implement strict internal safety measures.

"We consistently conduct safety drills and monitor crowd sizes to prevent overcrowding. We keep the number of seats and guests in check and conduct safety drills on a weekly, monthly, and bi-monthly basis," he explained.

Bharatesh from Slique club confirmed that all security protocols are being strictly adhered to in preparation for the upcoming party season.

"We have performed multiple safety drills, checked all equipment, and ensured that exit doors are accessible. These drills will be conducted regularly, especially during the party season, including New Year's Eve," he added.

This increased vigilance follows the Delhi Fire Services' comprehensive fire safety inspection initiative targeting restaurants, hotels, and clubs, especially with the Christmas and New Year celebrations approaching.

Officials indicated that the inspections will focus on the functionality of fire-fighting equipment, accessibility of emergency exits, and adherence to building regulations. This initiative was prompted by the Goa nightclub fire that resulted in 25 fatalities.

Additionally, the excise department of the Delhi government has instructed all hotel, club, and restaurant license holders to strictly follow fire safety regulations, warning that violations could lead to severe penalties, including license suspension or cancellation.

The department has also banned the use of all firecrackers, including electric ones, within licensed venues during the festive season.

Referring to a circular issued on May 30, 2024, the department reminded establishments with a gross floor area of 90 square meters or more to renew their fire no-objection certificates before they expire and to comply with the required safety standards. Smaller eateries have also been advised to maintain adequate fire prevention measures.

The circular warned that failure to comply would result in actions under the Delhi Excise Act, 2009, and the Delhi Excise Rules, 2010. Copies of this directive have been forwarded to the Municipal Corporation of Delhi and the Delhi Police for strict enforcement.
