Closure of Red Fort for Independence Day Preparations

As preparations ramp up for the grand celebration of the 80th anniversary of Independence Day, the historic Red Fort in Delhi has been closed to the public. An official directive states that from July 15 to August 15, access to this iconic site will be completely restricted due to security and logistical considerations.

The Archaeological Survey of India (ASI) issued this directive in light of extensive preparations for the Independence Day festivities. The order, released on July 9, indicates that this decision is made under the powers granted by Rule 5 of the Ancient Monuments and Archaeological Sites and Remains Act of 1959. Consequently, the Red Fort will remain closed to the public and tourists from July 15, 2026, until the conclusion of the Independence Day celebrations on August 15, 2026.

A senior ASI official explained that such orders are routinely issued each year to enhance security and arrangements ahead of Independence Day. The Red Fort, recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, has been the focal point of the country's Independence Day celebrations since August 15, 1947, marking the day India gained freedom from British colonial rule.

As in previous years, the main Independence Day event at the Red Fort on August 15 will feature stringent security measures. Only individuals holding official passes issued by the government will be permitted entry to the ceremony.
