Delhi's Mahila Samman Yojana Faces Criticism Over Delays and Conditions

The Mahila Samman Yojana in Delhi, aimed at providing women with ₹2500 monthly, has come under fire from opposition leader Atishi. She criticized the government for failing to deliver on promises made during the elections, claiming that instead of funds, only a committee was formed. With new eligibility conditions limiting benefits to one woman per family, concerns about the scheme's effectiveness are rising. As the government prepares to start registration, the timeline for actual fund transfers remains uncertain, leaving many women in doubt about the promised support.

Delhi's Mahila Samman Yojana Faces Criticism Over Delays and Conditions

Delhi's Mahila Samman Yojana: Monthly Support for Women

The Mahila Samman Yojana aims to provide women with a monthly financial aid of ₹2500 directly into their bank accounts. However, new conditions have been introduced regarding eligibility.

Opposition's Critique

Atishi, a prominent opposition leader in the Delhi Assembly, has criticized Chief Minister Rekha Gupta over the Mahila Samman Nidhi. She pointed out that on March 8, the promised funds were not deposited, nor did the registration process commence, only a four-member committee was established. Atishi likened this outcome to a mouse emerging after digging a mountain.

In a post on her official X account, Atishi recalled Prime Minister Modi's pledge during the Delhi elections that every woman would receive ₹2500 on Women's Day. She emphasized that this promise has not been fulfilled, questioning the authenticity of Modi's assurances.

Skepticism Over Promises

Atishi further asserted that the BJP government has demonstrated that Modi's guarantees are mere rhetoric. She expressed concern that the promises outlined in their Sankalp Patra would similarly prove to be untrue.

During a press conference, Atishi questioned the significance of forming a committee compared to the actual deposit of ₹2500 into women's accounts, reiterating that no funds had been transferred as promised.

Committee Formation and Conditions

Atishi criticized the BJP for misleading women, stating that they have only received a 'Jhunjhuna' in the form of a committee that will first establish criteria before identifying beneficiaries and commencing registration. The timeline for when the financial transfers will begin remains unclear.

She advised women to ensure their mobile numbers are updated in their bank accounts to receive notifications regarding the funds.

Eligibility Criteria

It is important to note that the scheme is intended for women from economically disadvantaged families, although the specific criteria for defining poverty have not been established. Additionally, only one woman per family will be eligible for the benefits, potentially limiting the number of recipients.

Government's Response

In response, Chief Minister Rekha Gupta announced that a cabinet meeting was held on Women's Day to approve the Mahila Samridhi Yojana. She stated that she would lead the newly formed committee and that registration for the scheme would commence shortly.
