Response to Recent Water Contamination Deaths

In light of the recent fatalities in Indore, Madhya Pradesh, attributed to contaminated drinking water, Delhi's Water Minister, Parvesh Sahib Singh, has instructed the Delhi Jal Board (DJB) to implement rigorous inspections to prevent similar tragedies in the national capital. The Delhi government has issued directives to the DJB that must be executed without delay.

Enhanced Water Quality Inspections Mandated

Parvesh Sahib Singh has mandated the DJB to intensify its scrutiny of water quality in order to avert any incidents in Delhi. Officials confirmed this directive on Wednesday, emphasizing the urgency of the measures to be taken.

Regular Pipeline Inspections to Be Accelerated

The directives specify that routine inspections of all water supply pipelines should be expedited, particularly in areas where drinking water lines run close to sewer lines. This is to ensure that any leaks, damage, or potential contamination points are identified and repaired promptly. Additionally, the CEO of DJB has been instructed to deploy dedicated teams for round-the-clock monitoring and maintenance in high-density and sensitive regions.

Recent Tragedy in Indore Highlights Urgency

Earlier this month, at least 16 individuals lost their lives in the Bhagirathpura area of Indore due to drinking contaminated water, with many others requiring hospitalization. In response, the Delhi government has also directed the DJB to act swiftly on public complaints regarding changes in water quality, odor, taste, or color, ensuring prompt verification and corrective measures are taken.
