Delhi Unveils New Health Centers Amid Controversy

Delhi's Chief Minister Rekha Gupta has inaugurated 33 Ayushman Arogya Mandirs and 17 Jan Aushadhi Kendras, marking a significant shift in the city's healthcare landscape. This initiative comes after a substantial financial allocation from the central government aimed at improving health infrastructure. However, the closure of Mohalla Clinics, a previous initiative by the AAP, raises concerns about the motivations behind these new centers and the potential politicization of healthcare services. As the city embarks on this new chapter in public health, questions linger about the effectiveness and accessibility of these changes for residents.

Delhi Unveils New Health Centers Amid Controversy

Inauguration of Ayushman Arogya Mandir

Chief Minister Rekha Gupta inaugurated the Ayushman Arogya Mandir at the Tis Hazari Court complex. In total, 33 Ayushman Arogya Mandirs and 17 Jan Aushadhi Kendras were launched across the national capital today. All cabinet ministers from Delhi are inaugurating these centers in their respective constituencies. CM Rekha Gupta stated that five years ago, the central government allocated ₹2400 crores to the Delhi government, directing them to enhance health infrastructure, establish health temples, and provide free health check-ups for the residents of Delhi. However, the previous administration failed to act on this directive.

Rekha Gupta emphasized that upon taking office, they began working towards this goal. As a result, the inauguration of 33 Ayushman Arogya Mandirs and 17 Jan Aushadhi Kendras has taken place today. Under a significant transformation of Delhi's public health service system, the Mohalla Clinics, a key initiative launched by the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) during their tenure, are now on the verge of closure. This development comes at a time when the BJP-led government has introduced a new health initiative - the Ayushman Arogya Mandir (AAM).

The Chief Minister remarked that this marks a new era for Delhi. The inauguration of health temples and Jan Aushadhi Kendras is set to be a milestone. Five years ago, the central government provided ₹2400 crores to the Delhi government with instructions to improve health infrastructure, establish health temples, and offer free health check-ups, but the previous government did not make any progress in this regard. Today, the inauguration of 33 Ayushman Arogya Mandirs and 17 Jan Aushadhi Kendras has been accomplished.

While the government claims that these new centers will offer advanced infrastructure and more comprehensive services, the abrupt replacement of Mohalla Clinics has raised concerns about the true intentions behind this decision, the potential effectiveness of AAM, and whether health services are being politicized. When the AAP government took charge in Delhi in 2015, it initiated the Mohalla Clinic program as a bold step towards providing affordable and accessible healthcare to urban communities.
