Delhi Unveils 'Mayur' as the Official Mascot for Commonwealth Table Tennis Championship 2026

On Tuesday, Delhi's Chief Minister Rekha Gupta introduced 'Mayur', the official mascot for the upcoming 22nd Commonwealth Table Tennis Championship 2026. This peacock-inspired figure embodies India's vibrancy, hospitality, and the unity that the tournament aims to foster.
Details of the Unveiling Ceremony
The mascot was revealed in the presence of notable figures, including Delhi's Education and Sports Minister Ashish Sood and Commonwealth Table Tennis Federation President Vivek Kohli. The championship is scheduled to take place at Thyagraj Stadium from July 27 to August 2. Mayur's design incorporates feathers that represent the flags of all participating Commonwealth nations, symbolizing friendship, harmony, and sportsmanship.
CM Gupta's Vision for Delhi
During the unveiling, CM Gupta emphasized that this event would allow Delhi to shine on the global sports stage. She stated, "The launch of Mayur, our national bird, with feathers symbolizing the flags of participating nations, perfectly represents the energy and enthusiasm of the Commonwealth Table Tennis Championship."
She praised the efforts of the organizers and officials involved in the tournament and reiterated the Delhi government's commitment to enhancing sports infrastructure and athlete development. "Hosting this event places our capital on an international platform. We aim to provide our youth and athletes with the opportunities they deserve," she added.

CM Gupta further assured that the government would persist in investing in sports facilities and athlete welfare. "We have made significant strides in sports infrastructure, prize money, and coaching for Delhi's athletes. Our goal is to ensure every sportsperson in Delhi has the chance and resources to excel and bring pride to our city and country. I am thrilled that an international championship will be held here from July 27 to August 2, 2026. The Delhi government is dedicated to supporting sports and athletes," she concluded.

Delhi's Sports Minister Ashish Sood remarked that hosting this prestigious event signifies the city's rising status as a sporting destination. "This international event showcases Delhi's potential. The government is focused on enhancing the sports ecosystem, ensuring that all necessary arrangements and facilities are in place at every stadium for athletes competing at various levels. Our ambition is to establish Delhi as the sports capital," he stated.
Anticipated Participation in the Championship
The championship, co-organized by the Delhi government and the Table Tennis Federation of India, is expected to draw participants from over 35 Commonwealth nations. Countries such as England, Australia, Canada, New Zealand, South Africa, Malaysia, Singapore, Scotland, Wales, Nigeria, Kenya, Jamaica, and Trinidad and Tobago are anticipated to compete in this week-long tournament, culminating in the finals on August 2.
