In anticipation of the New Year festivities, the Delhi Traffic Police has released a diversion advisory for major routes in the city. According to the traffic authorities, significant crowds are expected at key religious sites such as the Khatu Shyam Delhi Dham Temple and the Shri Mata Jhandewalan Temple in Paharganj due to the New Year and Ekadashi celebrations.
Heavy Traffic Expected on NH-44
The Delhi Traffic Police announced on social media platform X that on January 1, 2026, a large number of devotees are anticipated at the Khatu Shyam Delhi Dham Temple for the New Year and Ekadashi, which could lead to severe traffic congestion on the main roads of New Delhi. Travelers have been warned that traffic on NH-44 and surrounding roads may be slow and congested during this period.
Drunk Driving Enforcement on New Year's Eve
On New Year's Eve, the Delhi Traffic Police issued 868 fines for drunk driving. An official reported this on Thursday, stating that special enforcement teams were deployed on major roads, near nightlife venues, and residential areas to curb violations related to speeding, reckless driving, and motorcycle stunts. Checkpoints were established throughout the night to monitor drivers under the influence.
20,000 Personnel Deployed for Law and Order
To maintain law and order during the New Year celebrations, 20,000 personnel from the traffic and local police were deployed. Surveillance was conducted through CCTV cameras to monitor crowd activities and ensure rapid response to any incidents, with real-time coordination among district control rooms.
Focus on High-Traffic Areas
The police emphasized special attention on areas like Connaught Place, Hauz Khas, and Aerocity, where large gatherings are likely.
