Delhi's Commitment to Sustainable Public Transport

In a significant move towards sustainable public transportation, the national capital is set to welcome 500 new electric buses over the next two months. Pankaj Singh, the Transport Minister of Delhi, made this announcement on Friday, emphasizing the government's dedication to establishing Delhi as a leading hub for electric vehicles (EVs) in India. During a review meeting focused on integrating electric buses into the city's public transport fleet, Minister Singh stated that the aim is to launch a total of 1,000 electric buses by the end of the year.

Singh remarked that the public transport system is undergoing rapid transformation. He noted that within the next two months, 500 new electric buses will be operational, with plans to increase this number to 1,000 by year-end. These initiatives aim to provide cleaner and more convenient transportation options for all residents. He further urged for the swift deployment of these buses to ensure the public can benefit without delay. He stated, "By incorporating these electric buses into our public transport network, we are taking a decisive step towards making Delhi the EV capital of the country."

Currently, Delhi operates smaller electric buses known as "Devi" buses, which run on shorter routes covering a maximum distance of 12 kilometers. The review meeting included senior officials from the transport department and representatives from major electric bus manufacturers and suppliers, such as PMI Electro Mobility, Switch Mobility, and JBM. Minister Singh also called on bus suppliers to expedite the delivery of electric buses and prioritize the development of EV charging infrastructure at key depots to ensure smooth and uninterrupted operations.
