New Delhi, Oct 15: Angomcha Bimol Akoijam, a Congress Member of Parliament, has been called in for questioning by the Delhi Police regarding sexual harassment claims made against him at Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU).

The police initiated an FIR following a complaint lodged by the Chief Security Officer of JNU on October 11. This FIR was filed at the Vasant Kunj North police station and includes charges under various sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS).

Akoijam, who is also a dismissed professor from JNU, is specifically named in the FIR.

Authorities have confirmed that the Delhi Police are actively looking into the allegations.

Reports indicate that a total of 11 female students filed complaints against Akoijam in May, claiming he had lured them to his residence on campus under the guise of meetings, where he allegedly attempted to harass them.

Additionally, some students accused him of making lewd and inappropriate comments during class sessions.

The university's decision to terminate his employment followed an inquiry into these allegations.

The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has criticized the Congress party, particularly Rahul Gandhi, the Leader of Opposition in the Lok Sabha, for not taking decisive action against Akoijam, questioning whether his statement on 'smashing the patriarchy' is genuine or just political posturing.

On October 14, several BJP leaders, including National Commission for Women (NCW) Chairperson Vijaya Rahatkar, presented a memorandum demanding action against the Congress MP.

Earlier, on October 13, a group of BJP women Parliamentarians met with President Droupadi Murmu to urge action against Akoijam, highlighting the serious nature of the allegations and arguing that he is unfit to serve as a Parliamentarian.
