A Delhi Police inspector from Himachal Pradesh is embarking on a mission of social service in honor of his deceased wife. Kishori Lal Sharma, who is currently serving as an Inspector and hails from Mandi district, plans to establish the 'C.K. Memorial Charitable Trust' aimed at aiding cancer patients and individuals facing life-threatening conditions.
Transitioning to a New Chapter
Sharma, who will conclude his nearly 40-year tenure with the Delhi Police on March 31, 2026, intends to return to his hometown, Chailchowk in Mandi district, to oversee the trust. This initiative is a tribute to his late wife, Chanderkanta Sharma, who succumbed to cancer in November 2021 after a courageous battle.
Mission Driven by Love and Loss
The trust will focus on healthcare, education, and nutrition, with its base in Chailchowk while extending its reach throughout Himachal Pradesh. Sharma aims to provide support to cancer patients and others with serious illnesses by offering guidance, counseling, and information on treatment options and financial aid available through government programs.
Sharma's Vision for Cancer Awareness
Sharma expressed that many families panic upon receiving a cancer diagnosis, but timely screening and treatment can lead to successful recoveries. He highlighted that while cancer treatment can be costly, numerous government and non-government organizations provide financial assistance, and the trust will help patients navigate these resources.
Formal Launch in New Delhi
The official inauguration of the C.K. Memorial Charitable Trust is scheduled for April 1, 2026, in New Delhi. Lok Sabha MP Anurag Singh Thakur will inaugurate the event, with Delhi MP Kamaljeet Sehrawat presiding over the ceremony.
The launch is expected to attract several notable figures, including Himachal Pradesh MLA Vinod Kumar, Inder Singh, Delhi legislators, India’s first woman IPS officer Kiran Bedi, and Delhi Police Special Commissioner Neeraj Thakur, among other distinguished guests from both Himachal Pradesh and Delhi.
Ongoing Cancer Awareness Initiatives
In recent years, Sharma has been proactive in organizing cancer awareness and screening camps in remote regions of Himachal Pradesh, collaborating with D.S. Negi, CEO of Rajiv Gandhi Cancer Institute.
Prominent oncologists Dr. Jai Gopal Sharma and Dr. Poonam Sharma from Manipal Hospital, Delhi, have also pledged their support to the trust's initiatives.
A Tribute on International Women’s Day
Sharma emphasizes that the trust is not merely a social initiative but also a tribute to the resilience and legacy of his late wife. Chanderkanta Sharma was the founding president of the Himachal Mitra Mandal in Delhi and was actively engaged in community service throughout her life.
Despite having settled in Delhi and owning property there, Sharma feels a deep connection to his native village and its residents.
Commitment to the Cause
Sharma plans to allocate a significant portion of his retirement benefits to the trust, noting that many supporters have already offered their assistance. 'Even if we start small, our determination will help us grow and serve more people,' he stated.
Addressing a Rising Health Concern
With an increase in cancer cases reported in Himachal Pradesh, Sharma believes that awareness and early detection are crucial in combating the disease. Through the trust, he aims to collaborate with government agencies and healthcare institutions to promote awareness and ensure that patients in remote areas receive timely support and guidance.
On International Women’s Day, Sharma’s initiative serves as a poignant reminder of how personal loss can fuel a broader mission of compassion and service, honoring the memory of a woman whose life continues to inspire hope and care for others.
