Delhi Police Files Attempted Murder Charges Following Protest Violence

New Delhi, July 25: The Delhi Police has initiated an FIR at the Kartavya Path Police Station, charging individuals with attempted murder in relation to the violent protests that occurred near Rail Bhawan and Parliament on July 20.
This case includes multiple serious charges under the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS).
As per police reports, the FIR was filed following a complaint from an Inspector stationed at Kartavya Path Police Station, detailing the events that transpired on Rafi Marg during the protest.
The FIR indicates that the complainant was assigned to duty at C-Hexagon, Zone-11 (Pink Booth), starting at 5:00 a.m. as part of the security measures in the high-security area.
According to the complaint, after receiving alerts via the wireless network, the police team proceeded to the barricades near the Rail Bhawan roundabout, where a large number of protesters had gathered.
The FIR mentions that multiple announcements were made through loudspeakers, informing the crowd that prohibitory orders under Section 163 of the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita (BNSS) were in effect and that the protest lacked official permission.
Despite these warnings, the protesters allegedly refused to disperse and continued to chant slogans, as stated in the FIR.
The police further claimed that certain individuals within the crowd incited others to breach the barricades and advance towards Parliament.
According to the FIR, the protesters allegedly encircled police officers, assaulted them, and threw slippers and stones at the security personnel present.
The complaint also alleges that the mob attacked police with the intent to kill, resulting in injuries to several officers assigned to maintain law and order.
Additionally, the FIR claims that public property and numerous private vehicles were damaged during the unrest.
In light of the security needs surrounding Parliament and other significant government buildings, police resorted to using lathi-charges and tear gas to disperse the crowd and restore order.
Officials reported that the case has been registered under 13 sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, including Section 109(1) for attempted murder, as well as charges related to assault on public servants, obstruction of official duty, unlawful assembly, rioting, damage to public property, and actions endangering human life.
During the clashes on July 20, a total of 129 police personnel and over 60 protesters were injured.
In response to the violence, the Delhi Police has deployed 18 Deputy Commissioners of Police (DCPs) across various routes to enhance security measures.
Officials also noted that approximately 15 FIRs have been filed thus far concerning incidents related to the protest.
Furthermore, the Delhi Police stated that any allegations made by the Cockroach Janata Party (CJP) or any other individual or organization regarding the incident will be thoroughly investigated, and the results will be made public.
