Delhi Police Faces Significant Staffing Shortages with Over 9,000 Vacancies
Current Staffing Situation in Delhi Police
The Delhi Police is currently grappling with a substantial number of vacancies, totaling 9,248 across various ranks, from constables to Deputy Commissioners of Police (DCP) and Additional DCPs. Presently, there are 92,044 personnel actively serving in the force. This information was disclosed to Parliament by the government on Wednesday. The Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) provided details to the Rajya Sabha regarding the total approved strength and vacancies in the Delhi Police, which are set to be filled by November 30, 2025. According to the data, there are 60 approved positions for DCPs and Additional DCPs, out of which 13 remain unfilled. In the Junior Administrative Grade (JAG) for Additional DCPs, 15 out of 54 approved positions are vacant.
Vacancies Across Various Ranks
At the level of Assistant Commissioner of Police (ACP), there are 346 approved positions, with 125 currently vacant. The Delhi Police has 1,453 approved inspector roles, of which 108 are unoccupied. For sub-inspectors, there are 8,087 approved positions, with 1,039 vacancies. The approved number of Assistant Sub-Inspectors stands at 7,320, with 300 positions currently unfilled. Additionally, at the head constable level, 3,057 out of 23,724 approved positions are vacant, while among constables, there are 4,591 vacancies out of 50,946 approved roles.
Government's Response to Staffing Concerns
This information was provided by Union Minister of State for Home Affairs, Nityanand Rai, in a written response to a question posed by Trinamool Congress MP Prakash Chik Baraik in the Rajya Sabha. Rai further stated that the government acknowledges that vacancies arise from a dynamic process involving retirements, promotions, resignations, and other factors, and filling these positions is an ongoing effort. In response to inquiries about the total approved strength and vacancies within the Delhi Police, the minister noted that information regarding vacant positions is regularly communicated to recruitment agencies, and appointments are made following the completion of the recruitment process, which includes written examinations, physical tests, and medical evaluations.
