Delhi Police Enforces Restrictions Near Faiz-e-Elahi Mosque Following Stone-Pelting Incident
Security Measures Implemented After Violence
On Friday, officials announced the enforcement of Section 163 of the Indian National Security Code (BNSC) around the Faiz-e-Elahi Mosque in Delhi, following a stone-pelting incident near the Turkman Gate area. This regulation prohibits gatherings in the vicinity. The Delhi Police has urged citizens to perform prayers at home instead.
The stone-pelting occurred after the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) conducted an anti-encroachment drive near the mosque on Wednesday.
Increased Police Presence for Friday Prayers
In anticipation of Friday prayers, the Delhi Police has deployed over 1,000 officers around the mosque and its surroundings. Additionally, paramilitary forces and riot control vehicles have been stationed nearby to prevent any untoward incidents. According to police reports, a total of 11 individuals have been arrested in connection with the stone-pelting incident that occurred during the anti-encroachment operation.
Identification of Suspects and Ongoing Investigations
On Thursday, the Delhi Police confirmed that they have identified 30 individuals allegedly involved in the violence, utilizing CCTV footage and videos circulating on social media. Police teams have conducted raids at various locations to apprehend the remaining suspects. A police bodycam video captured moments before the stone-pelting incident during the encroachment removal is currently under review, along with similar footage that may have recorded the rioters.
Summons Issued to Politician for Investigation
In a related development, the Delhi Police is set to summon Mohibullah Nadvi, a member of the Samajwadi Party, to participate in the investigation. Nadvi was present at the scene shortly before the violence erupted. Despite repeated requests from senior officials, he remained in the vicinity during the incident. The anti-encroachment drive near Turkman Gate was initiated following directives from the Delhi High Court, and the operation commenced on the morning of January 7 after several coordination meetings with members of the Aman Committee and local stakeholders to maintain peace.
