Delhi's New Electric Bus Initiative

On Thursday, Chief Minister Rekha Gupta inaugurated a new fleet of electric buses and an intercity bus service from the ISBT (Inter-State Bus Terminal) in the national capital. The newly launched intercity bus service, named Delhi-Dharuhera, aims to strengthen the connectivity between the two cities. During the event, Gupta emphasized the significance of this service for intercity transport and stated that electric buses are the most effective solution for reducing pollution.

Chief Minister Gupta remarked, “Today, we are commencing the Delhi-Dharuhera intercity bus service... This is a crucial step for intercity connectivity... Alongside, 100 new electric buses will be added to our roads... Improving public transport is the most effective way to combat pollution, encouraging more people to opt for public transport over personal vehicles.”

Furthermore, Gupta highlighted that the Delhi government is working on increasing the number of electric buses in the city, with expectations of expanding the current fleet of 3,400 electric buses by next year. She announced plans to fully equip the entire bus fleet with electric vehicles. Additionally, she mentioned the revival of the university bus service that had been discontinued during the previous administration.

Gupta stated, “In light of the government's ongoing efforts to enhance Delhi's transport system, I would like to highlight a few points. Currently, we have 3,400 electric buses, which will increase by next year, and we are making efforts to ensure that our entire fleet is fully electric... Moreover, the university buses that were halted for several years during the previous government have been reinstated. Charging stations for our electric buses are being established. We require bus depots equipped with charging facilities for our current electric fleet. Therefore, we are renovating all bus depots and installing charging stations there.”

Gupta also shed light on other initiatives, including the construction of new automated testing centers and a new pink card system for women, allowing them to travel for free. She claimed that vehicles in Delhi are operating without a "pollution certificate." The Chief Minister noted that modern automated testing centers are being established in Nand Nagri, Tehkhand, and Burari.
