Court Directs Action on Unauthorized Establishments in Majnu Ka Tila

The Delhi High Court has instructed officials to take action against cafes, bars, and restaurants operating in the Majnu Ka Tila area of the national capital without approved building plans and safety measures.

The bench, comprising Chief Justice Devender Kumar Upadhyaya and Justice Tushar Rao Gedela, resolved a petition highlighting that various unauthorized restaurants are functioning in multi-story buildings along the banks of the Yamuna River, which are being used for commercial purposes.

The court acknowledged that the Delhi Development Authority (DDA) had already registered a complaint on its own initiative and stated, “We are disposing of the petition while directing the authorities to take necessary action under the law after reviewing the petitioner’s complaints.”

Additionally, the court ordered that any decisions and actions required based on the DDA's complaint should be implemented promptly, preferably within three months.

During the hearing, Justice Gedela remarked that half of the students from Delhi University frequent the cafes and restaurants in Majnu Ka Tila, urging officials to ensure timely action.

The Chief Justice humorously noted, “Everything will be removed except for the momo stall.” The court was hearing a public interest petition filed by Arnav Singh and another individual, which accused these establishments of operating without approved building plans.
