Delhi High Court Issues Ban on Sharing Inappropriate Content of Minor on Social Media

Court Ruling on Minor's Privacy Rights

The Delhi High Court has imposed a ban on the dissemination of any inappropriate material related to a minor girl on social media. This decision comes after unknown individuals created fake Instagram accounts and circulated manipulated images of her.

Justice Manoj Jain instructed Meta Platforms Inc., the parent company of Instagram, to provide the minor's family with the original subscriber information of those who set up the fraudulent accounts.

The court stated, “The petitioner (the minor victim) has established a prima facie case for the issuance of a prohibitory order. If no interim relief is granted in her favor, she will suffer irreparable harm or damage. Furthermore, the balance of convenience also favors the petitioner and is against the respondents.”

Those responsible for creating the fake accounts have been prohibited from uploading any inappropriate content related to the minor victim, whether real or altered, until the next hearing.

The next hearing is scheduled for July 4. The petition filed concerning the 15-year-old girl alleges that her right to privacy has been violated, as her images, both authentic and manipulated, were shared on Instagram by unidentified individuals.
