Umar Khalid Receives Temporary Bail

On Friday, the Delhi High Court granted student activist Umar Khalid a three-day interim bail in connection with the 2020 Delhi riots case. The court's decision allows Khalid to be released from June 1 to June 3, considering the need to assist his mother during her surgery.

Khalid had requested a 15-day interim bail to attend the Chehlum ceremony of his late uncle and to support his mother during her medical procedure.

Opposition from Delhi Police

The Delhi Police opposed this request, arguing that the surgery did not constitute an emergency and that no extraordinary circumstances justified the granting of interim bail. Earlier this week, Khalid approached the Delhi High Court for interim bail after a lower court rejected his plea related to the conspiracy behind the 2020 riots. He sought the temporary release to attend the 40th-day ceremony of his deceased uncle and to visit his mother, who is scheduled for surgery.

Supreme Court's Involvement

Following the Supreme Court's criticism of its own decision to deny bail to Khalid, the Delhi Police has requested that the matter be reviewed by a larger bench. This request comes in light of conflicting decisions made by two-judge benches regarding bail under the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act (UAPA).
