Delhi's Chief Minister Rekha Gupta has announced plans to approach the Supreme Court for uniform regulations regarding expired vehicles, aiming to align local rules with national standards. The government previously requested the suspension of a fuel ban on such vehicles, citing impracticality and technical challenges. Gupta emphasized the need to address public concerns and ensure that residents do not face inconvenience due to these regulations. The Supreme Court had previously imposed restrictions on older vehicles, and the government is committed to finding solutions that provide relief to the citizens of Delhi.

Delhi's Chief Minister Advocates for Consistent Vehicle Regulations

On Sunday, Chief Minister Rekha Gupta announced that her administration will request the Supreme Court to implement uniform regulations for expired vehicles in the national capital, similar to those in place across the country.

Last week, the Delhi government urged the Central Air Quality Commission to immediately suspend the fuel ban on expired vehicles. The government stated that it would make 'every possible effort' to address the issues related to the restrictions on these vehicles.

Delhi's Environment Minister, Manjinder Singh Sirsa, expressed in a letter to Rajesh Verma, the chairperson of the Air Quality Management Commission (CAQM), that the fuel ban is impractical and cannot be enforced due to technical challenges.

During an event, Gupta informed reporters that the government would present the public's sentiments to the Supreme Court. She stated, 'We will inform the Supreme Court about the measures taken by the government to control pollution. The same standards that apply nationwide should also be enforced in Delhi. We want to ensure that residents do not face any inconvenience.'

The Chief Minister emphasized their commitment to providing relief to the public. In a 2018 ruling, the Supreme Court imposed a ban on diesel vehicles older than ten years and petrol vehicles older than fifteen years in Delhi. Additionally, a 2014 order from the National Green Tribunal prohibits parking vehicles older than fifteen years in public spaces.
