Delhi's Initiative for Renewable Energy

Delhi Government Introduces Subsidy for Rooftop Solar Panels

The Delhi government has taken a significant step to promote renewable energy. In a cabinet meeting chaired by Chief Minister Rekha Gupta, approval was granted for an additional subsidy of ₹30,000 for the installation of 3 kilowatt (kW) rooftop solar panels. This subsidy is in addition to the ₹78,000 provided under the central government's PM Surya Ghar scheme. Consequently, residents in Delhi can receive a total financial assistance of ₹1.08 lakh for setting up a 3 kW solar system.

State Top-Up Under 'PM Surya Ghar: Free Electricity Scheme'

The Delhi government has launched a scheme named 'PM Surya Ghar: Muft Bijli Yojana State Top-Up' aimed at enhancing the effectiveness of the central initiative. Under this scheme, the Delhi government will provide an additional subsidy of up to ₹30,000 at a rate of ₹10,000 per kilowatt. This allows residents to install solar panels without any upfront costs and save an average of ₹4,200 on their monthly electricity bills.

Financial Assistance and Easy Loan Options

To facilitate the installation of solar panels, the Delhi government has partnered with banks and financial institutions to cover the remaining cost (approximately ₹90,000). This initiative will provide citizens with accessible loan options, enabling them to install solar panels without any initial investment. This move is particularly beneficial for middle-class families struggling with rising electricity costs.

Budget and Goals of the Scheme

The Delhi government has allocated a budget of ₹50 crore for this scheme, aiming to install rooftop solar systems in 2.3 lakh residential units over the next three years. This initiative will not only aid in environmental conservation but also propel Delhi towards cleaner and greener energy.

Eligibility and Application Process

To benefit from this scheme, applicants must be residents of Delhi and possess a valid electricity connection. Additionally, there should be sufficient space on the roof for solar panel installation. Citizens need to register on the official website of 'PM Surya Ghar: Muft Bijli Yojana' for the application process. After registration, authorized vendors will install the solar panels, and the subsidy amount will be directly transferred to the beneficiary's bank account.

Environmental Benefits and Energy Independence

Installing solar panels will not only lead to savings on electricity bills but also provide environmental benefits. Solar energy is a clean and renewable source that helps reduce carbon emissions. Furthermore, the establishment of solar panels will empower citizens to become self-reliant in energy, alleviating issues related to power outages.
