Delhi Government Introduces 200 New Electric Buses to Enhance Public Transport
Modernizing Delhi's Public Transport
In a significant move towards making public transport in Delhi more modern and eco-friendly, the government, led by Chief Minister Rekha Gupta, is set to introduce 200 new zero-emission electric buses. Additionally, to cater to the needs of women and students, 56 special bus services for ladies will also be launched.
Strengthening the Electric Bus Fleet
The addition of these new buses is expected to enhance the public transport network in Delhi. According to officials, the buses will be equipped with modern passenger amenities, including CCTV cameras, panic buttons, real-time tracking, and facilities for differently-abled passengers.
Expansion of the E-Bus Fleet
With the arrival of these new buses, the number of electric buses in Delhi's fleet will increase. The proposed fleet includes 88 buses that are 12 meters long and 112 DEVI buses that are 9 meters long. These buses will feature low floors and air conditioning, providing greater comfort for daily commuters.
Special Services for Women and Students
To facilitate easier daily travel for women and students, plans are underway to launch 56 special bus services. This includes 30 Ladies Special trips on 15 high-demand routes and 26 University Ladies Special trips on 13 routes.
Targeted Routes for Enhanced Connectivity
These services will operate on routes frequented by a large number of women and students. The routes are designed to connect residential areas with employment, commercial, educational, and government hubs, including key locations such as Nehru Place, AIIMS, South Extension, RK Puram, Connaught Place, ITO, Delhi Secretariat, Karol Bagh, and Kashmiri Gate.
100% Electric Operations for Special Services
A notable feature of these women-centric services is that they are proposed to be operated using electric DEVI buses. This initiative aims to promote clean transportation while ensuring convenience for women. Special stickers will be placed on the buses to help passengers easily identify them at bus stops and terminals.
New E-Bus Service Between Delhi and Karnal
To improve connectivity beyond the capital, a Delhi-Karnal interstate electric bus service is also being launched. This route will feature five fully electric and air-conditioned buses, with plans for 10 trips in each direction daily along a one-way route of approximately 133 kilometers.
Connecting Key Locations
This service will connect major locations starting from Maharana Pratap ISBT in Kashmiri Gate to significant areas such as Singhu Border, Rai, Bahalgarh, Murthal, Gannaur, Samalkha, Panipat, Gharaunda, and Madhuban. It will provide a clean transportation option for intercity travel between Delhi and Haryana.
Future Goals for the Bus Fleet
The Delhi government has set ambitious goals for expanding the public transport fleet in the coming years. Officials indicate plans to increase the bus fleet to approximately 14,000 buses by the fiscal year 2028-29, with a focus on enhancing the share of electric buses to promote a cleaner and more sustainable public transport system.
