Significant Budget Increase for Metro Expansion

On Sunday, Delhi's Chief Minister Rekha Gupta announced a substantial increase in the budget for the transport department, raising it by nearly 60% to ₹9,110 crores for the fiscal year 2025-26. This move is part of the government's strategy to reduce air pollution by focusing on the expansion of the Delhi Metro.


Gupta emphasized that adequate provisions have been made for the metro expansion to ensure that ongoing projects can progress without any interruptions. She also mentioned that the current government is addressing outstanding liabilities related to metro projects that were left pending by previous administrations.


The allocation for the transport department has surged from ₹5,702 crores in 2024-25 to ₹9,110 crores in 2025-26. Additionally, funding for metro projects has increased significantly, rising from approximately ₹500 crores last year to ₹2,929 crores this year.
