Fuel Restrictions on Older Vehicles in Delhi and NCR
The Delhi government has announced a ban on fueling diesel cars older than ten years and petrol cars older than fifteen years, effective November 1. This restriction will also extend to five districts in the National Capital Region (NCR) on the same date. An official from the Commission for Air Quality Management (CAQM) stated, "The directive will be amended under order 89. The campaign against end-of-life vehicles in Delhi will now commence in five NCR districts starting November 1."
This means that from November 1, cities such as Ghaziabad, Gautam Buddh Nagar (Noida), Gurugram, and Sonipat will also enforce the ban on providing fuel to older vehicles. On July 1, the Delhi government initiated a significant campaign to combat air pollution, which included halting fuel supply to older vehicles. According to the government order, petrol stations will not provide fuel to diesel vehicles over ten years old and petrol vehicles over fifteen years old. This initiative, directed by the CAQM, will utilize automated camera systems at fuel stations to monitor vehicle ages. Traffic police will also have the authority to seize or issue fines for violating vehicles.
Previously, Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta indicated that her government would request the Supreme Court to allow uniform regulations for expired vehicles in the national capital, similar to those in the rest of the country. Last week, the Delhi government urged the central air quality commission to immediately suspend the fuel ban on expired vehicles. The government stated that it would make "all possible efforts" to address issues related to the restrictions on expired vehicles.
