Significant Changes to Ration Card System
The Delhi Cabinet made a pivotal decision on Tuesday to expand access for ration card holders by raising the annual family income limit from ₹1.30 lakh to ₹2.5 lakh. Additionally, the Delhi government announced the introduction of a digital currency system for ration card beneficiaries. Under this new framework, the digital currency will be directly transferred to the beneficiaries' bank accounts, allowing them to purchase ration using the allocated funds.
Digital Currency Implementation
Officials indicated that ration will only be available through the digital currency system. This initiative aims to curb irregularities and corruption within the public distribution system. The decision follows the removal of approximately 7.72 lakh names from ration cards during a verification campaign conducted by the Delhi government. New ration cards will be issued to replace those removed.
Simplified Water Infrastructure Policy
In another significant move, the government approved a streamlined policy for the Delhi Jal Board (DJB) aimed at reducing water infrastructure fees and alleviating financial burdens on residents. Chief Minister Rekha Gupta announced this on Friday. Addressing the media, Gupta stated that the water infrastructure fee will now apply only to new construction projects or additional construction on existing properties. Furthermore, the water and sewer infrastructure fees will be determined based on actual water demand rather than the total area of the building.
Relief for Residents in Various Colonies
The Chief Minister further explained that the revised policy is designed to enhance transparency, promote development, and provide relief to citizens who previously faced high fees. The government has also announced concessions for different categories of colonies and economically weaker sections. According to the new policy, properties in E and F category colonies will receive a 50% discount on infrastructure fees, while properties in G and H category colonies will benefit from discounts of up to 70%.
