New Delhi, Nov 3: A court in Delhi has requested a response from the police regarding Congress MP Angomcha Bimol Akoijam's plea for anticipatory bail in a sexual harassment case. The judge has also ordered that no coercive measures be taken against him until November 5.
Special Judge Dig Vinay Singh has instructed the investigating officer to present the case file at the next hearing, scheduled for Thursday, when Akoijam's plea will be reviewed.
This development follows a recent decision by the Delhi High Court, which suspended Jawaharlal Nehru University's (JNU) order to terminate Akoijam's employment, with further hearings set for January 2027.
In response to these events, Akoijam expressed his faith in the deity Ibudhou Thangjing and reiterated his dedication to truth, justice, and his homeland. He stated on social media, “May the Almighty (Ibudhou) protect me at all times. I have decided to dedicate my life to the cause of truth and my motherland. Today marks another step towards truth and justice!”
Akoijam, who serves as the MP for the Inner Manipur constituency, was removed from his teaching position at JNU on October 9 after an internal investigation into allegations of sexual harassment made by students.
The university's Internal Committee had recommended severe disciplinary action against him. Akoijam has denied the allegations and has raised concerns about the integrity of the inquiry process.
The JNU Teachers’ Association has also voiced concerns regarding the procedures followed in his termination, claiming there were irregularities in the university's actions.
On October 12, the Delhi Police filed an FIR against Akoijam shortly after his dismissal. Reports indicate that at least 11 female students lodged complaints of sexual harassment against him in May.
The FIR was filed at the Vasant Kunj North police station based on a complaint and supporting documents provided by JNU's chief security officer (CSO).
The CSO's complaint noted that the university's Internal Committee had investigated the allegations from multiple complainants and compiled its findings, assessments, and observations.
“The allegations against Professor Angomcha Bimol Akoijam, Centre for Studies of Social Systems, School of Social Sciences, JNU, have been examined by the Internal Committee, and after assessment of witnesses, defence witnesses, and other material came on record,” the FIR states.
