Judicial Custody Extended for Turkman Gate Incident Suspects

On Thursday, a court in Delhi decided to extend the judicial custody of five individuals—Mohammad Kaif, Kasif, Areeb, Adnan, and Sameer—related to the stone-pelting incident at Turkman Gate for an additional 13 days. The First-Class Judicial Magistrate, Pooja Suhag, ordered that all accused be remanded into custody for this period. They were presented in court after spending one day in judicial custody. The hearing for their bail applications is scheduled for Friday in the relevant court.

The incident occurred on Wednesday during an anti-encroachment drive near Turkman Gate, where stones were reportedly thrown. Following the violence, the Delhi Police registered an FIR and arrested all five suspects on the same day. Advocates Nadeem Khan represented Sameer and Adnan, while Asad Mirza Beg represented Areeb, Kasif, and Kaif. The court accepted a request from Advocate Abid Ahmed to provide winter clothing in accordance with judicial custody regulations.

This event transpired during an anti-encroachment operation conducted by the MCD near the Faiz-e-Elahi Mosque, following directives from the Delhi High Court. According to the Delhi Police, several coordination meetings were held with members of the Aman Committee and other local stakeholders to maintain peace and prevent any untoward incidents before the encroachment removal commenced early on January 7.

In the meantime, the Delhi Police released the first CCTV footage from Turkman Gate, showing the scene during the incident at the Faiz-e-Elahi Mosque intersection. The footage captures masked individuals fleeing as police advance, with some seen throwing stones at the officers. This morning, the police identified 30 individuals connected to the stone-pelting incident that occurred during the MCD's anti-encroachment operation near the mosque, with a heavy police presence deployed in the area.
