Delhi CM Welcomes Supreme Court's Decision on 2020 Riots Case
Supreme Court's Ruling on Riots Case
Rekha Gupta, the Chief Minister of Delhi, expressed her approval of the Supreme Court's decision on Monday, which denied bail to activists Umar Khalid and Sharjeel Imam in connection with the conspiracy behind the 2020 Delhi riots. She emphasized that those responsible for igniting the riots should face severe punishment.
The Supreme Court ruled against granting bail to Khalid and Imam, citing their involvement in the conspiracy related to the riots, while allowing bail for five others based on their level of participation.
A bench comprising Justices Arvind Kumar and N.V. Anjaria stated that there is a prima facie case against Khalid and Imam under the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act (UAPA).
Gupta remarked to 'PTI-Video', "We welcome the court's decision. The bail pleas of the accused, Sharjeel Imam and Umar Khalid, have been rejected. Those who plunged Delhi into the flames of riots must receive the harshest penalties."
She added that political parties supporting those involved in the riots should receive a stern warning, labeling them as "participants in the crime."
Delhi's Law Minister Kapil Mishra stated that the Supreme Court's ruling confirmed that the riots were the result of a "planned conspiracy."
He noted, "A deliberate conspiracy was orchestrated against the people of Delhi. Today's decision has once again proven this."
Mishra emphasized that the ruling sends a clear message that such conspiracies will not be tolerated.
Delhi's Home Minister Ashish Sood remarked that this court order will serve as a precedent for those working against the nation.
Sood stated, "Opposing the government is not wrong, but opposing the country is a different matter. It is unfortunate that some show sympathy towards those accused of working against the nation."
Delhi's Environment Minister Manjinder Singh Sirsa insisted that rioters should face strict punishment and expressed gratitude to the Supreme Court for sending a strong message.
The riots in Northeast Delhi in February 2020 resulted in the deaths of 53 individuals and left over 700 injured.
