Delhi Chief Minister Responds to Racial Abuse Incident
New Delhi, Feb 25: On Wednesday, Delhi's Chief Minister Rekha Gupta acknowledged the reported incident of racial harassment that occurred in Malviya Nagar, emphasizing that any form of misconduct against individuals from the Northeast living in the capital will not be accepted.
Gupta met with the three women from Arunachal Pradesh who faced racial abuse and assured them of her unwavering support.
“Today, I had the opportunity to meet our young friends from the Northeast who were affected by this troubling incident in Delhi. They are strong, brave, and full of potential. I have promised them my complete support during this challenging time. It is important to state that Delhi is a city characterized by diversity, respect, and mutual dignity. We will take the strictest measures against those responsible for this incident,” Gupta shared on social media following their meeting.
Earlier, in a video message, the Chief Minister mentioned that she became aware of the incident through social media posts and tagged videos. “I will meet those sisters soon,” she had indicated.
Highlighting the importance of equal rights for all residents, Gupta remarked that individuals from all over the country, including the Northeast, play a vital role in Delhi’s development and deserve to be treated with respect.
“Everyone, including those from the Northeast, has equal rights in Delhi. They come here to work hard and improve their lives, contributing to the city’s advancement. Any form of misbehavior will not be tolerated,” she asserted.
In the meantime, Delhi Police apprehended the couple involved, identified as Harsh Singh and Ruby Jain, for allegedly subjecting the three women to racial slurs, humiliation, and intimidation in the Malviya Nagar area of South Delhi.
The incident reportedly occurred on February 20, following a disagreement regarding repair work at the women’s rented home. During the confrontation, the neighbors allegedly used offensive language, referring to the women derogatorily.
Authorities stated that relevant sections of the Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes (Prevention of Atrocities) Act have been applied based on the evidence available.
“An ACP-rank officer is currently overseeing the investigation. Further inquiries are ongoing and are being closely monitored by senior officials,” police representatives noted.
An FIR has been filed against the couple under various sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, 2023, including those related to outraging a woman’s modesty and inciting enmity based on religion, race, and other factors.
