Delhi Capitals Coach Discusses Tough Player Releases Ahead of IPL Auction
Challenging Choices: Badani on Du Plessis and Fraser-McGurk
Hemang Badani, the head coach of Delhi Capitals, has shared insights into the tough decisions made regarding the release of former South African captain Faf du Plessis and young Australian player Jake Fraser-McGurk before the upcoming Indian Premier League (IPL) auction. In a conversation on JioStar, Badani remarked, "Releasing a player of Faf du Plessis' caliber is never an easy task. It was a difficult choice since he has consistently excelled in the IPL over the years. However, we believe it is time to transition to a younger player who can embody a more aggressive style that aligns with our cricketing vision."
Fraser-McGurk's Performance and Future
Regarding Fraser-McGurk, who showed glimpses of potential last season, Badani explained that the franchise felt the return on investment did not justify his price tag. "We supported Jake based on his previous season's performance, but at nine crore, we didn't see sufficient value from that investment. Thus, we decided it was best to part ways with him as well," he stated.
Current Squad Satisfaction
Badani expressed contentment with the current team composition, stating, "Overall, we are quite pleased with the squad we have right now."
Du Plessis Withdraws from IPL Auction for PSL
Faf du Plessis announced on Saturday that he will not participate in the upcoming IPL auction, marking a significant shift in his long-standing relationship with the tournament. After 14 seasons in the IPL, where he played for teams like Chennai Super Kings, Rising Pune Supergiants, Royal Challengers Bengaluru, and Delhi Capitals, he has chosen to pursue a new challenge in the Pakistan Super League (PSL). Du Plessis expressed his gratitude for the support he received throughout his IPL journey.
Du Plessis' IPL Career Overview
The IPL auction for 2026 is scheduled for December 16 in Abu Dhabi. Unlike previous mega auctions, this will be a mini auction completed in a single day. Du Plessis was part of the Delhi Capitals for IPL 2025, but he was not retained by the franchise, which has kept 17 players. In IPL 2025, Du Plessis faced challenges, scoring 202 runs in 9 matches with an average of 22.44.
