Delhi Capitals' Axar Patel Faces Backlash After Disastrous IPL Defeat
Axar Patel Under Scrutiny Following DC's Heavy Loss
Delhi Capitals (DC) captain Axar Patel is facing significant criticism for his off-field behavior after the team's disheartening loss to the Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) during their IPL 2026 match at the Arun Jaitley Stadium in New Delhi on April 27.
The DC team suffered their fifth defeat of the season, losing by nine wickets to RCB. The batting lineup collapsed dramatically, managing only 75 runs in 16.3 overs, with six wickets falling during the powerplay. Abhishek Porel (30), David Miller (19), and Kyle Jamieson (12) were the only players to reach double figures, while the rest of the batting order struggled against RCB's formidable bowling attack.
RCB easily chased down the meager target of 76 runs in just 6.3 overs, with Devdutt Padikkal (34*) and Virat Kohli (23*) forming an unbroken partnership of 51 runs for the second wicket, securing a convincing victory.
Axar Patel's Casual Attitude Sparks Controversy
Despite the disappointing performance against Punjab Kings, Axar Patel appeared relaxed in a viral video shared on social media while traveling to Indira Gandhi International Airport for the team's next match against Rajasthan Royals in Jaipur.
In the video posted on his Snapchat, Axar humorously introduced England spinner Rehan Ahmed, engaging in a light-hearted conversation that mixed Hindi and English. They joked about their language differences, which led to a fun exchange.
Rehan humorously remarked on his experience with the team, noting the extremes he had witnessed in just a few games, from a massive total of over 260 runs against Punjab Kings to the shocking 75 all out against RCB.
Fans Criticize Axar Patel's Nonchalant Demeanor
While Axar's intention may have been to maintain a positive atmosphere in the dressing room after a tough loss, the video sparked backlash online, particularly on X (formerly Twitter). Fans and cricket analysts expressed their discontent with the timing and tone of the video.
Many criticized Axar Patel's seemingly carefree attitude, questioning the appropriateness of posting light-hearted content following such a humiliating defeat. Some fans called for stronger leadership and accountability from the team after consecutive losses, including one where they failed to defend a 264-run total.
Comments on social media reflected disappointment, with some fans suggesting that Axar's laid-back approach could lead to further issues for the team, which is already struggling in the league.
Current Standings and Future Challenges for Delhi Capitals
Following their defeat to RCB, the Delhi Capitals have dropped to seventh place in the points table, with three wins and five losses, totaling six points and a net run rate of -1.060 after eight matches.
To keep their playoff hopes alive in IPL 2026, the DC must secure victories in at least five of their remaining matches.
