Delhi Business Groups Urge Rahul Gandhi to Postpone November Rally

In a significant appeal, Delhi's business organizations have requested Congress leader Rahul Gandhi to postpone the INDI block rally set for November 1. They argue that the timing coincides with the crucial Diwali shopping season, which could lead to substantial economic losses estimated at ₹10,000 crores due to traffic disruptions and barricading. With major markets like Chandni Chowk and Sadar Bazaar potentially affected, traders emphasize the need for a date change to minimize impact on festive shopping. As the situation unfolds, the final decision on the rally date remains pending.

Business Organizations Request Delay of Rally

In New Delhi, various business organizations have appealed to Congress leader Rahul Gandhi to postpone the INDI block rally scheduled for November 1 at Ram Leela Maidan. The Chamber of Trade and Industry (CTI) sent a letter to Gandhi on Saturday, requesting that the rally be rescheduled for after November 10.

Business owners argue that the period around Diwali is crucial for Delhi's markets, and the rally could lead to traffic diversions, barricading, and disruptions that would negatively impact their operations. They estimate potential losses could reach up to ₹10,000 crores.

Reasons Behind the Request

According to CTI, the rally is planned to protest against the Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar and is expected to draw significant crowds. The organization has urged Gandhi to consider the increased foot traffic and business activities during the festive season when deciding on the rally date.

They contend that the rally could hinder access to nearby roads, making it difficult for customers to reach markets and affecting the supply chain for goods.

Potential Economic Impact During Diwali

Business representatives highlight that major shopping occurs during Dhanteras, Diwali, and Bhai Dooj, attracting numerous customers and traders from other states. They claim that Delhi's markets generate approximately ₹25,000 crores in sales during this festive period, and any restrictions on access could be detrimental.

CTI has projected that the rally could lead to losses of around ₹10,000 crores, although this figure is an estimate and not a confirmed loss.

Impact on Key Markets

Several prominent commercial centers, including Chandni Chowk, Sadar Bazaar, Chawri Bazaar, and Connaught Place, are located near Ram Leela Maidan. Business owners fear that traffic disruptions and barricading could significantly reduce customer footfall in these areas, affecting both retailers and wholesalers.

According to estimates from business organizations, there could be over 100,000 shops in the vicinity of Ram Leela Maidan, indicating that traffic management during a large event could have widespread implications.

Shop Counts in Key Areas

Data provided by business organizations indicates the following shop counts:

Chandni Chowk: Claims to have over 75,000 shops.

Sadar Bazaar: Estimated to have between 15,000 to 40,000 shops.

Chawri Bazaar: More than 1,000 traders involved in the paper business.

During Diwali, Sadar Bazaar typically sees a surge in shoppers and business activities compared to regular days, and traders are concerned that the rally could disrupt operations due to security measures and traffic restrictions.

Previous Year’s Sales Estimates

According to the CAIT, Diwali sales in Delhi were projected to reach around ₹75,000 crores in 2025. Traders emphasize that the festive season is one of the most critical periods for small retailers, wholesalers, and other business entities, providing significant economic support.

This is why business organizations are advocating for the rally to be held on a date that minimizes disruption to festive shopping and regular market activities.

Claims of Losses from Previous Protests

CTI has reported that previous protests in October and the resulting traffic restrictions have already caused approximately ₹3,000 crores in losses for Delhi's traders. Between October 6 and 13, leaders from the INDI block conducted several protests regarding the Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar, leading to barricading and traffic restrictions in certain areas.

Reports also indicate that during one protest, 45 metro stations were closed, and over 7,000 demonstrators were detained. Independent verification of these claims and the reported economic losses is necessary.

Potential Issues for Railway Passengers

The areas surrounding Old Delhi and New Delhi railway stations see significant foot traffic from passengers and traders, especially during Diwali when the number of buyers from other states increases.

Traders warn that if the rally disrupts traffic on major roads, it could delay passengers trying to reach railway stations and those coming to purchase goods in the markets.

Awaiting Decision on Rally Date

Delhi's business organizations have urged Rahul Gandhi to consider their concerns and postpone the rally date. Meanwhile, the proposed rally is linked to opposition protests against the Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar.

As of now, CTI has formally requested the postponement of the rally, but it remains unclear whether the date will be changed.
