New Delhi, Nov 5: Delhi's Chief Minister, Rekha Gupta, visited the site of a building collapse in the Chawri Bazar area on Thursday to assess the situation. The incident has resulted in two fatalities so far, prompting the Municipal Corporation to suspend both a Junior Engineer (JE) and an Assistant Engineer (AE).

During her address to the media, CM Gupta confirmed that two individuals were found deceased, while one person was rescued with injuries.

"The structure, which consisted of a ground floor and two upper floors, was under construction. The precise cause of the collapse will be determined after a thorough investigation," she stated.

She further mentioned, "The Municipal Corporation has taken action by suspending the JE and AE, and an FIR has been filed against the contractor responsible for the construction work."

CM Gupta expressed concern over the disregard for safety protocols during construction, stating, "Neglecting safety measures poses a serious risk to lives." She urged the public to adhere to safety guidelines during construction activities.

Additionally, she warned that officials supervising construction would face consequences if found negligent.

"The contractor showed a blatant disregard for worker safety, which is why an FIR has been lodged against him," CM Gupta added.

Harsh Malhotra, President of BJP Delhi, who was also present at the site, remarked, "Such incidents happen when construction is done against regulations and without adequate safety measures. Those responsible must be held accountable."

He reiterated the suspension of the MCD's AE and JE and called for FIRs against the accountable officials as well.

Malhotra emphasized the illegal nature of the construction, stating, "Buildings are bound to collapse if additional floors are constructed unlawfully."

Mayor Pravesh Wahi confirmed that the officials were suspended immediately and an investigation is in progress. A team led by the Municipal Commissioner has been formed to submit a report within three days.

Delhi Minister Ashish Sood expressed disappointment that regulations for development in this heritage area have not been established. He noted, "The Shahjahanabad Development Board was created, but its actions have been limited to superficial improvements. Our government is now working to create new laws for heritage buildings and the area."

A worker rescued from the site recounted that the wooden supports under the slab began to creak, indicating potential failure. He warned others about the impending collapse just before the building fell.

The search and rescue operations are ongoing, with more updates expected soon.
