Immediate Response to the Building Collapse

In New Delhi, the administration has swiftly mobilized following the tragic collapse of a five-story PG building in Satya Niketan. On Monday, Lieutenant Governor (LG) Tarunjeet Singh Sandhu convened a high-level meeting to review the serious incident.

High-Level Meeting Scheduled

According to the LG's office, this emergency meeting is set for 5 PM. It will include Chief Minister Rekha Gupta, the Delhi Police Commissioner, and top officials from the MCD, DDA, and other relevant agencies. The discussions are expected to cover the causes of the incident, the status of rescue operations, actions against illegal constructions, and measures to prevent such occurrences in the future.

Casualties from the Incident

The five-story building in South Delhi collapsed around 1:30 PM on Sunday. It was being used as a boys' paying guest accommodation. So far, six fatalities have been reported, with 11 to 12 individuals rescued from the debris. Concerns remain that others may still be trapped. Rescue efforts throughout the night involved teams from the NDRF, fire department, police, and other agencies.

Chief Minister's Visit and Directives

Chief Minister Rekha Gupta returned to the site on Monday morning, attributing the collapse to water accumulation in the basement and ongoing repair work in the aging structure. She ordered the immediate sealing of five-story illegal buildings constructed in violation of regulations in Delhi. The CM emphasized that strict action would be taken against culpable officials and property owners, ensuring that no one would escape accountability.

Police Action and Investigation

The police have filed an FIR against the building owner, Hariram Bansal, and others on charges of involuntary manslaughter and negligence. Reports indicate that the owner is currently at large. The Chief Minister has already mandated a magistrate's inquiry into the incident.

Future Coordination and Safety Measures

The high-level meeting led by the LG is expected to enhance coordination among all agencies and establish a concrete action plan against dilapidated and illegal buildings. The administration is now more proactive regarding the safety of Delhi residents.
