Dehradun Wedding Turns into Criminal Case: A Shocking Tale of Domestic Abuse
A Troubling Incident Unfolds
In February 2023, a wedding in Dehradun, Uttarakhand, took a dark turn, leading to a criminal case. On February 7, a young woman married a local man, and both families celebrated the occasion with traditional rituals. However, a complaint filed later revealed that disputes arose from the very first night of their marriage.
The woman alleged in her complaint that her husband had consumed a drug purported to enhance sexual performance and forced her into unnatural relations against her will. Initially, this issue remained confined within the household. After a few days, she returned to her parental home but later attempted to reconcile and returned to her in-laws.
Despite her efforts, the situation did not improve upon her return. She claimed that her husband again forced her into relations against her wishes. When she resisted, she alleged that he physically assaulted her and subjected her to mental harassment. Additionally, she accused her husband, in-laws, and another individual of pressuring her for dowry and harassment.
Approximately 20 days after the wedding, on February 27, 2023, the woman reportedly attempted suicide and was hospitalized, where she received treatment and survived. She later claimed that she was pressured not to disclose the incident to anyone.
Eventually, she filed a formal complaint with the police. The police in Dehradun registered a case against her husband for unnatural relations, assault, and other related charges. Investigations into the dowry harassment allegations against her in-laws and others were also initiated.
This case, recorded in 2023, became a notable entry in Dehradun's crime history, marking a wedding that transitioned from seven vows to legal proceedings. The ongoing hearings and judicial processes would determine the validity of the allegations, but the incident sparked significant discussions on marital consent and domestic abuse.
