New Delhi, Oct 3: The Indian government is aiming to finalize the long-anticipated multi-role fighter aircraft (MRFA) deal by the end of this financial year, contingent on the progress of ongoing negotiations, stated Air Chief Marshal A P Singh during a press briefing.

In a significant move to enhance its defense capabilities, India approved a proposal in February to acquire 114 Rafale fighter jets through a government-to-government agreement with France. This decision comes nearly twenty years after the initial proposal aimed at strengthening the Indian Air Force's (IAF) combat capabilities.

Currently, discussions regarding pricing and other essential aspects of the project are in progress.

During the press conference held in anticipation of Air Force Day, the Air Chief Marshal indicated that the IAF might need to consider alternative platforms if there are delays in the Advanced Medium Combat Aircraft (AMCA) program.

He mentioned that Russia has proposed the Su-57 jets, although no final decision has been reached on this offer.

When asked about the declining number of fighter squadrons, Air Chief Marshal Singh emphasized that the IAF requires a minimum of 36 to 40 new aircraft each year in the coming years.

He highlighted the importance of air power in enhancing overall military strength and stressed the necessity for India to bolster its aerial capabilities.

Regarding the modernization of the IAF, he noted the need for advancements through artificial intelligence, stating, "We must develop an AI-augmented force."

Furthermore, he underscored the importance of self-reliance in ensuring combat readiness and called for the domestic production of fighter jet engines.
