Indian Navy's Role in Maritime Security Emphasized by Vice Admiral Sobti
Strengthening Maritime Power
Panaji, Mar 31: On Tuesday, Vice Admiral Tarun Sobti, the Deputy Chief of Naval Staff, highlighted the importance of a robust navy in light of recent global events. He stated that the increasing strategic competition and conflicts underscore the Indian Navy's role as a key representation of the nation's maritime strength.
During the inauguration of the first Next Generation Offshore Patrol Vessel (NGOPV) at Goa Shipyard Limited in Vasco, Vice Admiral Sobti referenced the ongoing crisis in West Asia to illustrate the necessity for a formidable naval presence.
He remarked, "The Indian Navy is not only a symbol of India's maritime power but also a vital tool for diplomacy and maintaining regional stability amid rising strategic tensions."
Vice Admiral Sobti emphasized that the surrounding seas are crucial for trade, energy, and connectivity.
“India's maritime identity is shaped by its geography and historical context. With an extensive coastline and various territories in both the Arabian Sea and the Bay of Bengal, along with an Exclusive Economic Zone, our maritime domain presents both responsibilities and opportunities,” he explained.
He further asserted that protecting these interests necessitates a capable and proactive navy. The Indian Navy's influence in shaping the geopolitical landscape of the Indian Ocean region is becoming increasingly significant.
As global powers seek to assert their influence in the Indian Ocean, it is essential for the Indian Navy to maintain its status as a preferred security ally against maritime threats and as a first responder, ensuring maritime security and preventing hostile forces from gaining a foothold in the region.
Vice Admiral Sobti noted that the introduction of platforms like the NGOPVs is a crucial advancement in preparing for current and future challenges. He described the launch of this new class of warship as a pivotal moment, representing the realization of a vision, comprehensive design, and dedicated efforts, marking the start of a new era in India's maritime capabilities.
