New Delhi, Nov 3: In a remarkable operation spanning over 48 hours, the Indian Navy successfully rescued a fishing vessel that had been hijacked, along with its 20 crew members, off the coast of Somalia.
The fishing vessel, named Azini, was taken over by an armed group of pirates earlier last month, as reported by the Navy on Tuesday.
According to the Navy, the hijacking posed a serious threat to maritime security, as the vessel could have been used as a 'mother ship' to launch additional pirate attacks on merchant ships in the area.
In response to the hijacking, the Indian Navy deployed a warship to the area, supported by a maritime reconnaissance aircraft.
Through close coordination, these assets successfully located the vessel after extensive surveillance, monitored its movements, and implemented non-kinetic measures to restrict its movement and prevent escape.
Marine commandos were then deployed via a precision airdrop from an Indian Air Force C-17 aircraft.
In a well-executed tactical maneuver, the Indian Navy secured the vessel, neutralized the pirate threat, and ensured the safe release of all crew members.
The Navy characterized this operation as a testament to its high level of operational readiness and capability to conduct complex maritime security missions through effective inter-service collaboration.
Furthermore, it highlighted India's steadfast commitment to being the First Responder and Preferred Security Partner in the Indian Ocean Region.
The Indian Navy reiterated its dedication to protecting seafarers, securing crucial maritime trade routes, and maintaining a safe and stable maritime environment in the Indian Ocean Region.
