The inauguration ceremony was led by Cabinet Minister Kaushik Rai, who was joined by Battalion Commandant Dr. Pradip Saikia, active police personnel, retired staff, and local residents.
During the event, Rai commended the Battalion for completing the gateway project independently, without relying on government funds. He highlighted that the structure was primarily built through the Battalion's initiative and teamwork.
Rai expressed, “The Commandant and the Battalion personnel took the initiative and completed this beautiful gateway through their own efforts. This deserves rich appreciation.”
Beyond being a mere physical structure, the gateway represents the Battalion's identity, discipline, heritage, and its enduring connection with the Barak Valley community.
The 6th Assam Police Battalion was officially formed on February 24, 1965, following Government Notification No. HPL.700/64/57 dated February 2, 1965, initially based at Sanskrit Bhawan in Silchar. The headquarters was relocated to its current site on Kathal Road in 1973 and was made permanent through a government notification on February 7, 1992.
Reflecting on his long-standing ties with the area, Rai noted that the Battalion was established before his birth and that its relationship with the local community has developed over many years.
He stated, “The Battalion and the residents of this area share an old and cordial relationship. That bond should be preserved. The movement of local people should not be inconvenienced, and coordination between the Battalion and the community must become even stronger.”
Rai also mentioned the nearby old school and ancient Shiva temple, which attracts many visitors, especially during the annual Shivratri fair. He emphasized the importance of preserving local heritage while enhancing collaboration between the Battalion and residents.
Additionally, the Minister revealed that he has contacted various banks to discuss the possibility of establishing a bank branch and ATM in the area, noting the lack of adequate banking facilities for the many serving and retired employees living nearby. Bank officials have been tasked with conducting a survey and taking necessary actions.
Expressing his satisfaction with the inauguration, Battalion Commandant Dr. Pradip Saikia remarked that this gateway is the first formal main entrance constructed for the Battalion since its founding.
Saikia stated, “Since the establishment of this Battalion in 1965, we never had a dedicated main entrance. After 61 long years, the main gateway is being formally inaugurated for the first time. It is not merely the completion of a construction project; it is a visible symbol of our heritage, identity, discipline, and pride.”
He added that the initial structural work was initiated by former Cachar Senior Superintendent of Police Numal Mahatta at the request of the Battalion authorities, with the remaining construction and finishing completed through the Battalion's own efforts.
