First Successful Birth of Stump-Tailed Macaque at Meghalaya Zoo

Shillong, June 20: A significant achievement in wildlife conservation has been marked by the birth of a healthy infant stump-tailed macaque at the Meghalaya State Zoo. This event is notable as it represents the first successful breeding of this species at the facility, highlighting the state's ongoing efforts in ex-situ breeding.

The breeding pair was transferred from Aizawl Zoological Park in Mizoram as part of an animal exchange initiative, according to officials on Friday.

Principal Chief Conservator of Forests (Wildlife & Biodiversity) and Chief Wildlife Warden D Sathiyan described this development as a positive outcome of persistent wildlife conservation efforts in Meghalaya. He emphasized that this success illustrates the state's dedication to scientific zoo management and the preservation of endangered species.

“This achievement showcases Meghalaya’s commitment to effective zoo management and the conservation of vulnerable species, while also enhancing public awareness about the role of modern zoos in safeguarding endangered wildlife for future generations,” he stated.

The stump-tailed macaque is classified as vulnerable on the IUCN Red List and is threatened by habitat destruction, fragmentation, and human interference.

The newborn macaque is reported to be healthy and is currently under the vigilant care of the zoo's veterinary team, remaining with its mother and troop, as per officials.

Experts in animal care and forest management have praised the successful birth as a sign of the species' adaptability to its new surroundings, commending the high standards of animal care, veterinary assistance, and scientific management at the zoo.
