New Delhi, May 2: Admiral Dinesh K Tripathi, the Chief of Naval Staff, commenced a four-day official visit to Myanmar on Saturday, aimed at bolstering operational collaboration between the two nations' navies and exploring new maritime security initiatives.

The Indian Navy emphasized that this visit highlights the enduring relationship between India and Myanmar, founded on mutual trust and a shared dedication to maintaining stability in the Indian Ocean Region.

During his stay, Admiral Tripathi is set to engage in discussions with Myanmar's top military officials, including General Ye Win Oo, the Commander-in-Chief of the armed forces, Defence Minister General U Htun Aung, and Admiral Htein Win, the chief of the Myanmar Navy.

The agenda will include a review of current maritime cooperation, enhancing operational connections, and expanding collaborative efforts.

Additionally, he plans to visit the Myanmar Navy’s Central Naval Command and its Number One Fleet, focusing on defense cooperation, capacity building, training, and capability enhancement.

Myanmar is a strategically significant neighbor for India, sharing a 1,640-km border with several northeastern states, including Nagaland and Manipur.

The country plays a crucial role in India's policies such as “Neighbourhood First,” “Act East,” and MAHASAGAR (Mutual and Holistic Advancement for Security and Growth Across Regions).

Regular engagements between the Indian Navy and Myanmar Navy include staff talks, training exchanges, and joint operational activities.

These initiatives encompass the India-Myanmar Naval Exercise (IMNEX), Indo-Myanmar Coordinated Patrol (IMCOR), and hydrographic surveys.

Myanmar has also been involved in significant Indian naval events, including the Indian Ocean Naval Symposium, MILAN exercise, International Fleet Review, and the Goa Maritime Conclave.

The Navy stated that this visit reinforces India’s commitment to strengthening bilateral defense relations and ensuring maritime security in the region.

Refugee Crisis in Mizoram

In a related development, there has been a reported influx of refugees into Mizoram along the Indo-Myanmar border following an alleged aerial bombardment by the Myanmar military in Khawpuichhip village, Chin state, on Friday.

Officials reported that seven individuals, including six children, lost their lives in the attack, causing panic among local residents. Over 50 people crossed into the Indian village of Zokhawthar on Friday night, as per local police reports.

Chin state, which shares more than 500 km of international border with India, has experienced increased aerial assaults amid the ongoing unrest in Myanmar.
