Today marked the launch of 'Lighter Than Yesterday', the first novel by IAS officer Rakesh Kumar Prajapati, published by Rupa Publications India Pvt. Ltd. The inaugural copy was presented to His Holiness the Dalai Lama in McLeodganj, who also contributed the foreword for the book.

The narrative revolves around the profound connection between a grandfather and his grandson, delving into themes of love, ambition, and the quest for inner tranquility. It poses a fundamental question: What truly gives life its meaning?

For many in India, cherished childhood memories are often intertwined with their grandparents—stories shared at bedtime, lessons imparted through dialogue, and moments filled with unconditional love. These experiences significantly influence the individuals children grow into.

However, maintaining this closeness is increasingly challenging. Families are often separated by distance, work commitments dominate daily life, and screens have taken over the time once dedicated to family interactions. As generational gaps widen, while affection may persist, the chances to express it diminish.

The novel highlights this shift through its central relationship, examining what younger generations might forfeit when they lack time for their elders. Beyond companionship, they may miss out on the wisdom, patience, and sense of belonging that such bonds provide.

Transitioning from this intimate family dynamic, the story addresses the broader challenges of adult life. The grandson's journey prompts reflections on the ambitions individuals chase and the sacrifices they endure.

In India, success is frequently gauged by academic performance, job titles, and professional achievements. Young adults invest years striving for these objectives, with families sharing in their struggles and celebrating their victories. Yet, achieving these goals does not always yield the anticipated happiness.

The novel scrutinizes this conundrum within the context of civil services. For many young Indians, passing the IAS or IPS exams is a dream that promises social respect and a chance to serve the nation. So, why do some young officers opt to resign?

Through its fictional narrative, the book delves into the human dilemmas surrounding such choices. Can professional success satisfy all personal aspirations? What occurs when a dream no longer aligns with one's values? How does one muster the courage to reassess a life constructed over years of hard work?

These themes resonate beyond civil services; students, professionals, and parents may find reflections of their own challenges within them. The story links their pursuit of success to a deeper yearning for love, purpose, and peace.

Prajapati, an IAS officer from the 2012 batch of the Himachal Pradesh cadre, has undertaken various district and state government roles. Currently, he serves as the Director in the Department for Promotion of Industry and Internal Trade, Government of India. His early experiences with his grandfather lend a personal touch to the novel's central relationship.

Presenting the first copy in McLeodganj holds special significance for him, as much of his public service and family life has been deeply rooted in Himachal Pradesh.

'Lighter Than Yesterday' encourages readers to contemplate what truly deserves their time and focus, urging them to look beyond immediate milestones and appreciate the relationships that imbue life with meaning.
