Stakeholder Workshop for Yamuna River Restoration

The Delhi Development Authority (DDA) conducted its inaugural stakeholder consultation workshop for 'Yamuna Dialogues' on July 10, 2026. This initiative, guided by Delhi's Lieutenant Governor Sardar Tarnjit Singh Sandhu, aims to unite various stakeholders in efforts to rejuvenate the Yamuna River. According to a press release, this workshop followed the Lieutenant Governor's tour of flood-affected areas along the river and subsequent review meetings with senior DDA officials.

During these meetings, he emphasized the need for a multi-faceted approach to tackle pollution in the river. He stressed that residents of Delhi, experts, and other stakeholders should actively participate in the restoration efforts, transforming this initiative into a collective civic mission rather than solely a governmental task. He also mentioned that floodplains should be accessible to the public, and current usage should be considered in their restoration and maintenance. Furthermore, he highlighted the importance of utilizing existing domestic and international best practices as guiding standards.

The DDA's envisioned Yamuna Dialogues aim to create a collaborative platform for national and international experts and institutions. This platform will facilitate the exchange of best practices in river restoration and riverbank development, discussions on nature-based solutions for floodplain management, exploration of innovative financing options for large-scale ecological infrastructure, and alignment of ongoing efforts with frameworks for climate adaptation and urban sustainability.

This initiative seeks to foster information sharing, build strategic partnerships, and identify large-scale solutions tailored to the unique ecological and urban context of the Yamuna. The outcomes of these discussions will culminate in two major sessions scheduled for September 2026 and January 2027. During these sessions, the 'Delhi Yamuna Compact' will be finalized, outlining a comprehensive roadmap that prioritizes, strategizes, and sets timelines for the restoration of the Yamuna corridor.
